“Durwest’ Superintendent, Doug White, on Leadership and the CREST Project”

Doug White has been with Durwest for nine years and most recently served as Superintendent on the CREST project. In this Behind the Build feature, he reflects on the challenges, milestones, and teamwork that defined the build.

One of the biggest challenges on the project was managing a wide range of trades, along with the different personalities that come with them. As he explains, it all comes down to mindset. “You have to learn to let things go. If you’ve had a rough day, you can’t carry it with you. Every morning you need to show up with a positive attitude and start fresh.”

From the outside, the CREST building tells only part of the story. Most people passing by would never realize how much work lies beneath the surface. “When people stop and look at the building, they don’t know the amount of concrete that’s below ground. A lot of people think it looks like an art gallery,” he says, highlighting the contrast between the clean architectural appearance and the heavy structural work supporting it.

Despite the challenges, there were many rewarding moments throughout the project. One that stood out was setting the final section of the monopole. “Seeing the enormous size of the pole once it was fully in place brought a big smile to my face,” he recalls.

What stands out most is the way the team came together to complete the project. “All of the trades worked as a team, and that made a huge difference,” he says. He also took time to recognize those who went above and beyond. Dean Allen stepped up to supervise whenever needed and consistently exceeded expectations, while Chris White joined the project at the midway point and quickly made a strong impact. He also emphasized the importance of the laborers on site, noting that the project benefited from an exceptional group whose hard work was essential to its success.

The CREST project stands as a reflection of teamwork, resilience, and the dedication behind building something far greater than what meets the eye.
